Let us now turn our attention to a different kind of sample, a much older and more austere artifact. The Tufte-an philosophy of stripping everything down to its bare essentials is incredibly powerful, but it can sometimes feel like it strips the humanity out of the data as well. It’s the disciplined practice of setting aside your own assumptions and biases to understand the world from someone else’s perspective. The template is a servant to the message, not the other way around. This new awareness of the human element in data also led me to confront the darker side of the practice: the ethics of visualization. Armed with this foundational grammar, I was ready to meet the pioneers, the thinkers who had elevated this craft into an art form and a philosophical practice.
