It’s a discipline, a practice, and a skill that can be learned and cultivated. We are also very good at judging length from a common baseline, which is why a bar chart is a workhorse of data visualization. In our digital age, the physical act of putting pen to paper has become less common, yet it engages our brains in a profoundly different and more robust way than typing.
