For another project, I was faced with the challenge of showing the flow of energy from different sources (coal, gas, renewables) to different sectors of consumption (residential, industrial, transportation). 25 In this way, the feelings chart and the personal development chart work in tandem; one provides a language for our emotional states, while the other provides a framework for our behavioral tendencies. A good designer understands these principles, either explicitly or intuitively, and uses them to construct a graphic that works with the natural tendencies of our brain, not against them. The cognitive cost of sifting through thousands of products, of comparing dozens of slightly different variations, of reading hundreds of reviews, is a significant mental burden. Our focus, our ability to think deeply and without distraction, is arguably our most valuable personal resource. I started going to art galleries not just to see the art, but to analyze the curation, the way the pieces were arranged to tell a story, the typography on the wall placards, the wayfinding system that guided me through the space.
