What I've come to realize is that behind every great design manual or robust design system lies an immense amount of unseen labor. You have to anticipate all the different ways the template might be used, all the different types of content it might need to accommodate, and build a system that is both robust enough to ensure consistency and flexible enough to allow for creative expression. Doing so frees up the brain's limited cognitive resources for germane load, which is the productive mental effort used for actual learning, schema construction, and gaining insight from the data.
