Data visualization was not just a neutral act of presenting facts; it could be a powerful tool for social change, for advocacy, and for telling stories that could literally change the world. The future is, in many exciting ways, printable. Faced with this overwhelming and often depressing landscape of hidden costs, there is a growing movement towards transparency and conscious consumerism, an attempt to create fragments of a real-world cost catalog. Perhaps the most important process for me, however, has been learning to think with my hands. Why that typeface? It's not because I find it aesthetically pleasing, but because its x-height and clear letterforms ensure legibility for an older audience on a mobile screen. But the price on the page contains much more than just the cost of making the physical object.
