Tree Size Chart. A classic print catalog was a finite and curated object. The term finds its most literal origin in the world of digital design, where an artist might lower the opacity of a reference image, creating a faint, spectral guide over which they can draw or build. Perhaps the most important process for me, however, has been learning to think with my hands. Extraneous elements—such as excessive gridlines, unnecessary decorations, or distracting 3D effects, often referred to as "chartjunk"—should be eliminated as they can obscure the information and clutter the visual field.

That disastrous project was the perfect, humbling preamble to our third-year branding module, where our main assignment was to develop a complete brand identity for a fictional company and, to my initial dread, compile it all into a comprehensive design manual.
