This was the moment the scales fell from my eyes regarding the pie chart. The goal is to find out where it’s broken, where it’s confusing, and where it’s failing to meet their needs. In an age where digital fatigue is a common affliction, the focused, distraction-free space offered by a physical chart is more valuable than ever. It uses annotations—text labels placed directly on the chart—to explain key points, to add context, or to call out a specific event that caused a spike or a dip. But what happens when it needs to be placed on a dark background? Or a complex photograph? Or printed in black and white in a newspaper? I had to create reversed versions, monochrome versions, and define exactly when each should be used.
