The Hero's Journey Chart. Why that typeface? It's not because I find it aesthetically pleasing, but because its x-height and clear letterforms ensure legibility for an older audience on a mobile screen. The act of writing a to-do list by hand on a printable planner, for example, has a tactile, kinesthetic quality that many find more satisfying and effective for memory retention than typing into an app. It stands as a testament to the idea that sometimes, the most profoundly effective solutions are the ones we can hold in our own hands. The price of a smartphone does not include the cost of the toxic e-waste it will become in two years, a cost that is often borne by impoverished communities in other parts of the world who are tasked with the dangerous job of dismantling our digital detritus.
