It is the pattern that precedes the pattern, the structure that gives shape to substance. It recognizes that a chart, presented without context, is often inert. A simple family chore chart, for instance, can eliminate ambiguity and reduce domestic friction by providing a clear, visual reference of responsibilities for all members of the household. I crammed it with trendy icons, used about fifteen different colors, chose a cool but barely legible font, and arranged a few random bar charts and a particularly egregious pie chart in what I thought was a dynamic and exciting layout. It’s a continuous, ongoing process of feeding your mind, of cultivating a rich, diverse, and fertile inner world. I saw them as a kind of mathematical obligation, the visual broccoli you had to eat before you could have the dessert of creative expression.
