I had to create reversed versions, monochrome versions, and define exactly when each should be used. The job of the designer, as I now understand it, is to build the bridges between the two. However, this rhetorical power has a dark side. The dream project was the one with no rules, no budget limitations, no client telling me what to do.

If the catalog is only ever showing us things it already knows we will like, does it limit our ability to discover something genuinely new and unexpected? We risk being trapped in a self-reinforcing loop of our own tastes, our world of choice paradoxically shrinking as the algorithm gets better at predicting what we want.
