A truly honest cost catalog would have to find a way to represent this. I was witnessing the clumsy, awkward birth of an entirely new one. The process of user research—conducting interviews, observing people in their natural context, having them "think aloud" as they use a product—is not just a validation step at the end of the process. Are we creating work that is accessible to people with disabilities? Are we designing interfaces that are inclusive and respectful of diverse identities? Are we using our skills to promote products or services that are harmful to individuals or society? Are we creating "dark patterns" that trick users into giving up their data or making purchases they didn't intend to? These are not easy questions, and there are no simple answers. And the very form of the chart is expanding. They are designed to optimize the user experience and streamline the process of setting up and managing an online store.
