The catalog becomes a fluid, contextual, and multi-sensory service, a layer of information and possibility that is seamlessly integrated into our lives. In his 1786 work, "The Commercial and Political Atlas," he single-handedly invented or popularised three of the four horsemen of the modern chart apocalypse: the line chart, the bar chart, and later, the pie chart. The most successful designs are those where form and function merge so completely that they become indistinguishable, where the beauty of the object is the beauty of its purpose made visible. The placeholder boxes themselves, which I had initially seen as dumb, empty containers, revealed a subtle intelligence. The focus is not on providing exhaustive information, but on creating a feeling, an aura, an invitation into a specific cultural world. The real cost catalog, I have come to realize, is an impossible and perhaps even terrifying document, one that no company would ever willingly print, and one that we, as consumers, may not have the courage to read.
