The myth of the hero's journey, as identified by Joseph Campbell, is perhaps the ultimate ghost template for storytelling. Yarn, too, offers endless possibilities, with fibers ranging from wool and cotton to silk and synthetics, each bringing its own texture, drape, and aesthetic to the finished piece. The genius lies in how the properties of these marks—their position, their length, their size, their colour, their shape—are systematically mapped to the values in the dataset. They are organized into categories and sub-genres, which function as the aisles of the store. Extraneous elements—such as excessive gridlines, unnecessary decorations, or distracting 3D effects, often referred to as "chartjunk"—should be eliminated as they can obscure the information and clutter the visual field.
