Does the proliferation of templates devalue the skill and expertise of a professional designer? If anyone can create a decent-looking layout with a template, what is our value? This is a complex question, but I am coming to believe that these tools do not make designers obsolete. It gave me ideas about incorporating texture, asymmetry, and a sense of humanity into my work. It is a sample not just of a product, but of a specific moment in technological history, a sample of a new medium trying to find its own unique language by clumsily speaking the language of the medium it was destined to replace. Without this template, creating a well-fitting garment would be an impossibly difficult task of guesswork and approximation. You walk around it, you see it from different angles, you change its color and fabric with a gesture. This is why an outlier in a scatter plot or a different-colored bar in a bar chart seems to "pop out" at us.
