If you don't have enough old things in your head, you can't make any new connections. But what happens when it needs to be placed on a dark background? Or a complex photograph? Or printed in black and white in a newspaper? I had to create reversed versions, monochrome versions, and define exactly when each should be used. While sometimes criticized for its superficiality, this movement was crucial in breaking the dogmatic hold of modernism and opening up the field to a wider range of expressive possibilities. For another project, I was faced with the challenge of showing the flow of energy from different sources (coal, gas, renewables) to different sectors of consumption (residential, industrial, transportation). The continuously variable transmission (CVT) provides exceptionally smooth acceleration without the noticeable gear shifts of a traditional automatic transmission. The reason this simple tool works so well is that it simultaneously engages our visual memory, our physical sense of touch and creation, and our brain's innate reward system, creating a potent trifecta that helps us learn, organize, and achieve in a way that purely digital or text-based methods struggle to replicate.
