The physical act of writing by hand on a paper chart stimulates the brain more actively than typing, a process that has been shown to improve memory encoding, information retention, and conceptual understanding. You can use a single, bright color to draw attention to one specific data series while leaving everything else in a muted gray. A chart was a container, a vessel into which one poured data, and its form was largely a matter of convention, a task to be completed with a few clicks in a spreadsheet program.
