Each item is photographed in a slightly surreal, perfectly lit diorama, a miniature world where the toys are always new, the batteries are never dead, and the fun is infinite. It was a pale imitation of a thing I knew intimately, a digital spectre haunting the slow, dial-up connection of the late 1990s. The infamous "Norman Door"—a door that suggests you should pull when you need to push—is a simple but perfect example of a failure in this dialogue between object and user. This model imposes a tremendous long-term cost on the consumer, not just in money, but in the time and frustration of dealing with broken products and the environmental cost of a throwaway culture. We look for recognizable structures to help us process complex information and to reduce cognitive load. The dream project was the one with no rules, no budget limitations, no client telling me what to do.
