It taught me that creating the system is, in many ways, a more profound act of design than creating any single artifact within it. Each card, with its neatly typed information and its Dewey Decimal or Library of Congress classification number, was a pointer, a key to a specific piece of information within the larger system. The psychologist Barry Schwartz famously termed this the "paradox of choice. The cost of the advertising campaign, the photographers, the models, and, recursively, the cost of designing, printing, and distributing the very catalog in which the product appears, are all folded into that final price. It is selling a promise of a future harvest. Allowing oneself the freedom to write without concern for grammar, spelling, or coherence can reduce self-imposed pressure and facilitate a more authentic expression.
