Numeric Size Chart. The chart is one of humanity’s most elegant and powerful intellectual inventions, a silent narrator of complex stories. I learned that for showing the distribution of a dataset—not just its average, but its spread and shape—a histogram is far more insightful than a simple bar chart of the mean. When I first decided to pursue design, I think I had this romanticized image of what it meant to be a designer. The "master file" was a painstakingly assembled bed of metal type, and from this physical template, identical copies could be generated, unleashing a flood of information across Europe.
