It’s a mantra we have repeated in class so many times it’s almost become a cliché, but it’s a profound truth that you have to keep relearning. The Tufte-an philosophy of stripping everything down to its bare essentials is incredibly powerful, but it can sometimes feel like it strips the humanity out of the data as well. The ongoing task, for both the professional designer and for every person who seeks to improve their corner of the world, is to ensure that the reflection we create is one of intelligence, compassion, responsibility, and enduring beauty. I was being asked to be a factory worker, to pour pre-existing content into a pre-defined mould. Similarly, an industrial designer uses form, texture, and even sound to communicate how a product should be used. But what happens when it needs to be placed on a dark background? Or a complex photograph? Or printed in black and white in a newspaper? I had to create reversed versions, monochrome versions, and define exactly when each should be used.
