The professional design process is messy, collaborative, and, most importantly, iterative. Conversely, someone from a family where vigorous debate was the norm may follow a template that seeks out intellectual sparring in their personal and professional relationships. This brought unprecedented affordability and access to goods, but often at the cost of soulfulness and quality. Yet, to suggest that form is merely a servant to function is to ignore the profound psychological and emotional dimensions of our interaction with the world. But the physical act of moving my hand, of giving a vague thought a rough physical form, often clarifies my thinking in a way that pure cognition cannot. This shift in perspective from "What do I want to say?" to "What problem needs to be solved?" is the initial, and perhaps most significant, step towards professionalism.
