When I first decided to pursue design, I think I had this romanticized image of what it meant to be a designer. Iconic fashion houses, such as Missoni and Hermès, are renowned for their distinctive use of patterns in their designs. Once the problem is properly defined, the professional designer’s focus shifts radically outwards, away from themselves and their computer screen, and towards the user. They are built from the fragments of the world we collect, from the constraints of the problems we are given, from the conversations we have with others, from the lessons of those who came before us, and from a deep empathy for the people we are trying to serve. Never use a metal tool for this step, as it could short the battery terminals or damage the socket. The chart is a quiet and ubiquitous object, so deeply woven into the fabric of our modern lives that it has become almost invisible.
