The aesthetic that emerged—clean lines, geometric forms, unadorned surfaces, and an honest use of modern materials like steel and glass—was a radical departure from the past, and its influence on everything from architecture to graphic design and furniture is still profoundly felt today. What is the first thing your eye is drawn to? What is the last? How does the typography guide you through the information? It’s standing in a queue at the post office and observing the system—the signage, the ticketing machine, the flow of people—and imagining how it could be redesigned to be more efficient and less stressful. It is a record of our ever-evolving relationship with the world of things, a story of our attempts to organize that world, to understand it, and to find our own place within it. Never apply excessive force when disconnecting connectors or separating parts; the components are delicate and can be easily fractured. In contrast, a poorly designed printable might be blurry, have text that runs too close to the edge of the page, or use a chaotic layout that is difficult to follow. Each card, with its neatly typed information and its Dewey Decimal or Library of Congress classification number, was a pointer, a key to a specific piece of information within the larger system.
