What I've come to realize is that behind every great design manual or robust design system lies an immense amount of unseen labor. For a year, the two women, living on opposite sides of the Atlantic, collected personal data about their own lives each week—data about the number of times they laughed, the doors they walked through, the compliments they gave or received. It is a thin, saddle-stitched booklet, its paper aged to a soft, buttery yellow, the corners dog-eared and softened from countless explorations by small, determined hands. The simple, physical act of writing on a printable chart engages another powerful set of cognitive processes that amplify commitment and the likelihood of goal achievement. A simple family chore chart, for instance, can eliminate ambiguity and reduce domestic friction by providing a clear, visual reference of responsibilities for all members of the household. Whether it's a child scribbling with crayons or a seasoned artist sketching with charcoal, drawing serves as a medium through which we can communicate our ideas, beliefs, and experiences without the constraints of words or language.
