The first major shift in my understanding, the first real crack in the myth of the eureka moment, came not from a moment of inspiration but from a moment of total exhaustion. The designer of a mobile banking application must understand the user’s fear of financial insecurity, their need for clarity and trust, and the context in which they might be using the app—perhaps hurriedly, on a crowded train. It is a network of intersecting horizontal and vertical lines that governs the placement and alignment of every single element, from a headline to a photograph to the tiniest caption. We don't have to consciously think about how to read the page; the template has done the work for us, allowing us to focus our mental energy on evaluating the content itself. As a designer, this places a huge ethical responsibility on my shoulders. The printable chart is not a monolithic, one-size-fits-all solution but rather a flexible framework for externalizing and structuring thought, which morphs to meet the primary psychological challenge of its user.
