The freedom of the blank canvas was what I craved, and the design manual seemed determined to fill that canvas with lines and boxes before I even had a chance to make my first mark. We look for recognizable structures to help us process complex information and to reduce cognitive load. This phenomenon is closely related to what neuropsychologists call the "generation effect". They were the visual equivalent of a list, a dry, perfunctory task you had to perform on your data before you could get to the interesting part, which was writing the actual report. The journey from that naive acceptance to a deeper understanding of the chart as a complex, powerful, and profoundly human invention has been a long and intricate one, a process of deconstruction and discovery that has revealed this simple object to be a piece of cognitive technology, a historical artifact, a rhetorical weapon, a canvas for art, and a battleground for truth. The vehicle is also equipped with a wireless charging pad, located in the center console, allowing you to charge compatible smartphones without the clutter of cables.
