We can hold perhaps a handful of figures in our working memory at once, but a spreadsheet containing thousands of data points is, for our unaided minds, an impenetrable wall of symbols. The professional design process is messy, collaborative, and, most importantly, iterative. This is where things like brand style guides, design systems, and component libraries become critically important. Sketching is fast, cheap, and disposable, which encourages exploration of many different ideas without getting emotionally attached to any single one. I couldn't rely on my usual tricks—a cool photograph, an interesting font pairing, a complex color palette. I had to define a primary palette—the core, recognizable colors of the brand—and a secondary palette, a wider range of complementary colors for accents, illustrations, or data visualizations.
