A designer who only looks at other design work is doomed to create in an echo chamber, endlessly recycling the same tired trends. Creativity is stifled when the template is treated as a rigid set of rules to be obeyed rather than a flexible framework to be adapted, challenged, or even broken when necessary. Once constructed, this grid becomes a canvas for data. So my own relationship with the catalog template has completed a full circle. Once a story or an insight has been discovered through this exploratory process, the designer's role shifts from analyst to storyteller. The catalog ceases to be an object we look at, and becomes a lens through which we see the world.
