What is the first thing your eye is drawn to? What is the last? How does the typography guide you through the information? It’s standing in a queue at the post office and observing the system—the signage, the ticketing machine, the flow of people—and imagining how it could be redesigned to be more efficient and less stressful. I pictured my classmates as these conduits for divine inspiration, effortlessly plucking incredible ideas from the ether while I sat there staring at a blank artboard, my mind a staticky, empty canvas. Creating a good template is a far more complex and challenging design task than creating a single, beautiful layout. In graphic design, this language is most explicit. For comparing change over time, a simple line chart is often the right tool, but for a specific kind of change story, there are more powerful ideas.
