What is the first thing your eye is drawn to? What is the last? How does the typography guide you through the information? It’s standing in a queue at the post office and observing the system—the signage, the ticketing machine, the flow of people—and imagining how it could be redesigned to be more efficient and less stressful. In addition to being a form of personal expression, drawing also has practical applications in various fields such as design, architecture, and education. I now understand that the mark of a truly professional designer is not the ability to reject templates, but the ability to understand them, to use them wisely, and, most importantly, to design them. This procedure is well within the capability of a home mechanic and is a great confidence-builder. Our professor framed it not as a list of "don'ts," but as the creation of a brand's "voice and DNA. But I'm learning that this is often the worst thing you can do.
