I think when I first enrolled in design school, that’s what I secretly believed, and it terrified me. These aren't just theories; they are powerful tools for creating interfaces that are intuitive and feel effortless to use. Mass production introduced a separation between the designer, the maker, and the user. The question is always: what is the nature of the data, and what is the story I am trying to tell? If I want to show the hierarchical structure of a company's budget, breaking down spending from large departments into smaller and smaller line items, a simple bar chart is useless. The perfect, all-knowing cost catalog is a utopian ideal, a thought experiment.
