The Industrial Revolution was producing vast new quantities of data about populations, public health, trade, and weather, and a new generation of thinkers was inventing visual forms to make sense of it all. It was a visual argument, a chaotic shouting match. Was the body font legible at small sizes on a screen? Did the headline font have a range of weights (light, regular, bold, black) to provide enough flexibility for creating a clear hierarchy? The manual required me to formalize this hierarchy. Every printable chart, therefore, leverages this innate cognitive bias, turning a simple schedule or data set into a powerful memory aid that "sticks" in our long-term memory with far greater tenacity than a simple to-do list. If the catalog is only ever showing us things it already knows we will like, does it limit our ability to discover something genuinely new and unexpected? We risk being trapped in a self-reinforcing loop of our own tastes, our world of choice paradoxically shrinking as the algorithm gets better at predicting what we want. A sketched idea, no matter how rough, becomes an object that I can react to.
