That critique was the beginning of a slow, and often painful, process of dismantling everything I thought I knew. Does the proliferation of templates devalue the skill and expertise of a professional designer? If anyone can create a decent-looking layout with a template, what is our value? This is a complex question, but I am coming to believe that these tools do not make designers obsolete. A designer using this template didn't have to re-invent the typographic system for every page; they could simply apply the appropriate style, ensuring consistency and saving an enormous amount of time. Up until that point, my design process, if I could even call it that, was a chaotic and intuitive dance with the blank page. The "disadvantages" of a paper chart are often its greatest features in disguise.
