I began to see the template not as a static file, but as a codified package of expertise, a carefully constructed system of best practices and brand rules, designed by one designer to empower another. A design system in the digital world is like a set of Lego bricks—a collection of predefined buttons, forms, typography styles, and grid layouts that can be combined to build any number of new pages or features quickly and consistently. You have to anticipate all the different ways the template might be used, all the different types of content it might need to accommodate, and build a system that is both robust enough to ensure consistency and flexible enough to allow for creative expression. I now understand that the mark of a truly professional designer is not the ability to reject templates, but the ability to understand them, to use them wisely, and, most importantly, to design them. It’s a simple formula: the amount of ink used to display the data divided by the total amount of ink in the graphic.
