It is the practical, logical solution to a problem created by our own rich and varied history. This disciplined approach prevents the common cognitive error of selectively focusing on the positive aspects of a favored option while ignoring its drawbacks, or unfairly scrutinizing a less favored one. A good designer understands these principles, either explicitly or intuitively, and uses them to construct a graphic that works with the natural tendencies of our brain, not against them. A designer could create a master page template containing the elements that would appear on every page—the page numbers, the headers, the footers, the underlying grid—and then apply it to the entire document. It has become the dominant organizational paradigm for almost all large collections of digital content. From that day on, my entire approach changed.
