To hold this sample is to feel the cool, confident optimism of the post-war era, a time when it seemed possible to redesign the entire world along more rational and beautiful lines. Faced with this overwhelming and often depressing landscape of hidden costs, there is a growing movement towards transparency and conscious consumerism, an attempt to create fragments of a real-world cost catalog. The brief was to create an infographic about a social issue, and I treated it like a poster. It was a pale imitation of a thing I knew intimately, a digital spectre haunting the slow, dial-up connection of the late 1990s. In contrast, a well-designed tool feels like an extension of one’s own body. The project forced me to move beyond the surface-level aesthetics and engage with the strategic thinking that underpins professional design.
