Most of the results will be absurd, but the process forces you to break out of your conventional thinking patterns and can sometimes lead to a genuinely innovative breakthrough. Whether it is used to map out the structure of an entire organization, tame the overwhelming schedule of a student, or break down a large project into manageable steps, the chart serves a powerful anxiety-reducing function. The underlying function of the chart in both cases is to bring clarity and order to our inner world, empowering us to navigate our lives with greater awareness and intention. Once the problem is properly defined, the professional designer’s focus shifts radically outwards, away from themselves and their computer screen, and towards the user. It was an InDesign file, pre-populated with a rigid grid, placeholder boxes marked with a stark 'X' where images should go, and columns filled with the nonsensical Lorem Ipsum text that felt like a placeholder for creativity itself. I'm fascinated by the world of unconventional and physical visualizations.
