An architect uses the language of space, light, and material to shape experience. In the face of this overwhelming algorithmic tide, a fascinating counter-movement has emerged: a renaissance of human curation. The question is always: what is the nature of the data, and what is the story I am trying to tell? If I want to show the hierarchical structure of a company's budget, breaking down spending from large departments into smaller and smaller line items, a simple bar chart is useless. This is the realm of the ghost template. The Maori people of New Zealand use intricate patterns in their tattoos, known as moko, to convey identity and lineage. We don't have to consciously think about how to read the page; the template has done the work for us, allowing us to focus our mental energy on evaluating the content itself.
