A designer decides that this line should be straight and not curved, that this color should be warm and not cool, that this material should be smooth and not rough. The goal isn't just to make things pretty; it's to make things work better, to make them clearer, easier, and more meaningful for people. It sits there on the page, or on the screen, nestled beside a glossy, idealized photograph of an object. It is a way for individuals to externalize their thoughts, emotions, and observations onto a blank canvas, paper, or digital screen. It was hidden in the architecture, in the server rooms, in the lines of code. The template represented everything I thought I was trying to escape: conformity, repetition, and a soulless, cookie-cutter approach to design.
