The freedom of the blank canvas was what I craved, and the design manual seemed determined to fill that canvas with lines and boxes before I even had a chance to make my first mark. He was the first to systematically use a line on a Cartesian grid to show economic data over time, allowing a reader to see the narrative of a nation's imports and exports at a single glance. That simple number, then, is not so simple at all. It would shift the definition of value from a low initial price to a low total cost of ownership over time.
