Learning about concepts like cognitive load (the amount of mental effort required to use a product), Hick's Law (the more choices you give someone, the longer it takes them to decide), and the Gestalt principles of visual perception (how our brains instinctively group elements together) has given me a scientific basis for my design decisions. Beyond these fundamental forms, the definition of a chart expands to encompass a vast array of specialized visual structures. A Gantt chart is a specific type of bar chart that is widely used by professionals to illustrate a project schedule from start to finish. The most common sin is the truncated y-axis, where a bar chart's baseline is started at a value above zero in order to exaggerate small differences, making a molehill of data look like a mountain. The brief is the starting point of a dialogue. Tangible, non-cash rewards, like a sticker on a chart or a small prize, are often more effective than monetary ones because they are not mentally lumped in with salary or allowances and feel more personal and meaningful, making the printable chart a masterfully simple application of complex behavioral psychology.
