I've been experimenting with them, using them not to generate final designs, but as brainstorming partners. The act of writing a to-do list by hand on a printable planner, for example, has a tactile, kinesthetic quality that many find more satisfying and effective for memory retention than typing into an app. It reveals a nation in the midst of a dramatic transition, a world where a farmer could, for the first time, purchase the same manufactured goods as a city dweller, a world where the boundaries of the local community were being radically expanded by a book that arrived in the mail. At the same time, augmented reality is continuing to mature, promising a future where the catalog is not something we look at on a device, but something we see integrated into the world around us. 36 The act of writing these goals onto a physical chart transforms them from abstract wishes into concrete, trackable commitments.
