The card catalog, like the commercial catalog that would follow and perfect its methods, was a tool for making a vast and overwhelming collection legible, navigable, and accessible. But it wasn't long before I realized that design history is not a museum of dead artifacts; it’s a living library of brilliant ideas that are just waiting to be reinterpreted. The final posters were, to my surprise, the strongest work I had ever produced. It is an idea that has existed for as long as there has been a need to produce consistent visual communication at scale.
