That humble file, with its neat boxes and its Latin gibberish, felt like a cage for my ideas, a pre-written ending to a story I hadn't even had the chance to begin. For a child using a chore chart, the brain is still developing crucial executive functions like long-term planning and intrinsic motivation. The manual empowered non-designers, too. The algorithm can provide the scale and the personalization, but the human curator can provide the taste, the context, the storytelling, and the trust that we, as social creatures, still deeply crave. It is the difficult, necessary, and ongoing work of being a conscious and responsible citizen in a world where the true costs are so often, and so deliberately, hidden from view.
